The Patients’ Association Holds First Ever Conference of Patient and Family Advisers

Yesterday, the first ever meeting of Patient and Family Advisers (PFAs) was held at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital in Toronto. Patient and Family Advisers from Thunder Bay to Halifax were there to get to know each other and work on issues that they felt strongly about. Everyone there wanted to build a strong national network of advisers in order to bring a helpful patient and family voice to healthcare.

Bringing the Patient Voice to Healthcare Technology

The Patients’ Association was invited to participate in the Oct 20-22, 2012 Hacking Health event at the MaRS DD centre.  Based on the “hackathon” model, the event brought together those with ideas for healthcare applications with programmers, designers, medical professionals and many others, to develop working models -- in two days! Our role was to provide patient insights to the teams as mentors and to participate in the judging of the applications.

Many teams had yet to consider how to include patients in the design process; some had yet to even consider including patients. The Patients' Association wants to help solve this problem.

KevinMD: Test results without Physician Guidance causes Patient Anxiety

A patient once blamed me for causing him considerable anxiety because he had to wait several weeks before receiving the results of a lab test, which I had ordered. Many patients commonly have to wait days, if not weeks, before getting lab results from their doctor. The delay can affect patients’ health negatively.

Training Staff in Patient (and Family) Centred Care in the 21st Century

March 27, 2012 - I was asked to review a paper called "Person-centered care training in long-term care settings: analysis of trainees' discourse on usefulness and facility of transfer into practice." The paper began by identifying the type of patient-centred care that is being taught in the training programs. It is called “Relationship Based Care” or RBC.
