Enhancing the Patient Voice in Ontario’s Health Care Boards

The group working on PAC’s governance project, The Patient Voice in Ontario’s Health Care Boards, has been busy making visits to health care organizations across the province.

In May we had the opportunity to visit Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital and learn about their Family Advisory Council and Youth Advisory Council. We were impressed by how their Advisors are active in providing input to the planning, evaluation, and improvement of services and programs at HBKRH. They are a great example of patients and caregivers having a voice in an organization!

This week we went to visit Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre to learn about their efforts in Patient & Family Centred Care. With over 80 Patient Experience Advisors active on committees across their hospital, they are another example of how the patient perspective is an effective tool in designing health care services.

With this project gradually coming to a close, we look forward to summarizing what we’ve learned and sharing it with other organizations. It is great to see how effective the patient voice can be as a part of the decision-making process in health care
